School Leaver Employment Support
The School Leaver Employment Support (SLES) otherwise known as the Transition to Work (TTW) is a 2 year program offering participants and their families a boutique, person-centred program promoting work and life skills in a wide range of industries for school leavers.
The program is designed to provide hands on work experience in a range of working environments, with particular focus on the individual skills and interest areas of each participant. The various work experience options offer competency based learning to secure sustainable employment. As part of the SLES Program, young adults will embark on a variety of meaningful work experiences in the areas of horticulture, retail, warehouse and production, customer service and hospitality.
SLES caters to the individual needs of each client through a personalised employment plan which includes personal development, employability skills and work experience. Each participant has the opportunity of choosing and planning their own journey giving them empowerment, independence and fulfilment towards their future goals. The program involves a range of work experience placements. Suitable participants may have the opportunity to enrol in an appropriate TAFE Access course that relates to their skills and work interests. Windgap is also looking at providing a literacy and numeracy program to assist individuals in controlling their own paperwork and finances. SLES is aligned with local businesses to assist in achieving clients’ goals.

- Fabulous Food @ Florence – A program where participants meet and greet, collect orders and money, and prepare and deliver food to around 40 customers each Thursday.

Windgap staff are trained, experienced and knowledgeable in all areas of the program to assist and support each participant in reaching their personal goals.
The relationship between Windgap and families is an integral part of the program. Windgap meets regularly with the participants and their families to ensure satisfaction and service improvement.

“Kevin started going to Windgap for work experience while in year 11 at high school. It was the best introduction for Kevin to assist him in transitioning from school to work. He got to know everyone before actually leaving high school and experiencing the Transition To Work program. Kevin has been learning valuable work skills with the fantastic support from staff and has made friends and grown intellectually. I have found the experience of Windgap easy with the support from the staff. Kevin will be finishing Transition To Work at the end of the year and hopes to still do 3 days a week with Growability where he has been working in paid employment. On Thursdays, SLES group trains in improving and developing cooking and hospitality skills. The program includes: training in creating the menu, independent shopping skills, taking orders and money handling, food preparation, following health and safety regulations, food distribution and clean up at our Commercial Kitchen Facility at Tukkabox Cafe.
They offer their delicious, cafe standard menu which ranges from BBQ chicken panini w/ basil pesto to mushroom, olive and semi-dried tomato tarts to many other delicious and healthy options for Windgap staff, supported employees and clients.
Horticulture program helps clients gain and develop gardening skills. The program covers Work Health & Safety (WH&S), tool and equipment recognition, and using equipment correctly. Some clients who gain skills and confidence in horticulture have been transferred to be paid supported employees in Windgap’s Growability team.
SLES’s retail program has continued to be a success throughout the year with several of our young clients participating in work experience. The program covers learning stock recognition, product placement and presentation. The clients also learn how to conduct themselves appropriately in the workplace and how to follow WH&S policies and procedures.
