Understanding The NDIS

Windgap is a Registered NDIS Provider

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australia wide scheme that supports people with a permanent and significant disability which affects their ability to take part in everyday activities.

The NDIS essentially provides people with disability more choice and control over how, when and where supports are received, and certainty of care and support needed over their lifetime.

How does the NDIS work?

If an individual is eligible, NDIS funding is received on an annual basis to purchase reasonable and necessary supports to help pursue individual goals, achieve increased independence and participation in the community. Support can include education skills building, equipment, health, therapeutic supports, and well-being, employment and social participation.

How will the individual benefit?

  • The NDIS is a national system. If you, or someone you love, is born with a disability or acquires one later in life, your funding and plan travels with you, no matter what state or territory you live in.
  • The NDIS is fiscally responsible. It is not welfare but an investment in individual capacity leading to more positive results for people with a disability, their families and carers.
  • Choice. Each NDIS plan is individualised and person-centred. People with a disability, their families and carers will have more opportunity and choice of how they participate in social, economic, and cultural life with the supports and programs they choose based on their individual needs.
  • An important focus on early intervention and delivering supports which produce the best long term outcomes, maximising opportunities for independence, empowerment, health and well-being and participation.
  • The provision of a secure and consistent pool of funds that with each plan evaluates new goals required for services and support; including regular care, supports, therapy and equipment needed to reach person centred goals.
  • The NDIS recognise the additional physical, emotional and financial stress that can impact a family. Under the scheme, families will be able to access support and services for assistance in meeting the needs of the person with a disability and their family.
  • All Australians benefit. Increased awareness and participation means that our communities will benefit from a more diverse and inclusive environment. Everyone needs to remember that disability can affect anyone, anytime.
